ON CAMPUS: Launches awareness week

Article content

As a second-year Nursing student at Loyalist College, I have come to learn that nursing is about promoting health and wellbeing for everyone. Many of our students come from outside the Quinte area and are not familiar with the services available to residents living here. I am the Health Sciences Leader on the Loyalist Student Government and felt that it was my responsibility to try to shed some light on the wonderful network of health services that are accessible to everyone in the community. I wanted to establish a convenient, interesting forum for students to access this information.

Over the past year, I listened carefully to students when they approached the Student Government and my initiative began to take shape. Many people make New Year’s resolutions regarding their health and often by the end of January, their resolve begins to wane. That is why I chose the week of January 27th to 31st to hold the first Health Awareness Week at Loyalist College and reinforce the importance of health and wellness within the campus community.

The week’s activities will launch on Monday with the Health Awareness Market located in the Dining Hall in the Kente Building from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event’s community support has been phenomenal. We will be joined by independent, non-profit, publicly funded, and government organizations, providing information on their services and how they can help those attending to achieve their health goals. Nursing students will conduct a blood pressure clinic while Esthetics and Spa Management students provide hand massages and mini manicures. Recognized Teacher and Practitioner of Therapeutic TouchTM, Alison Cooke, will provide complimentary therapeutic touch treatments and the St. John’s therapy dogs will be stopping by. Guests are encouraged to drop in and bask in the glow of the Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) light.

Nursing students will continue to offer the blood pressure clinic throughout the remainder of the week in the Lancer’s Lounge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Chef’s Table in the Dining Hall will feature a different Heart Healthy menu option each day.

I hope that this event will engage students and the public in thinking, talking and participating in their health, and becoming active in healthy lifestyle choices. This opportunity allows students to have an open and free forum to be able to talk and ask questions.

As a second-year Nursing student, I will be attending Brock University for the final two years of my collaborative program. This Health Awareness initiative is very important to me. I want it to be successful and hopefully become an annual campus event. I’ve been very involved in the Loyalist community and feel, in a way, that this is my parting gift. I am grateful for the positive response I’ve received from the cCollege and the generous support from students and staff. Loyalist is a close-knit community – one that’s very important to me.
