BDIA: New fitness opportunities downtown

Article content

Fitness – it can be a love/hate relationship for many people. How do you find the time in your busy schedule? What type of fitness class or routine will be good for you? There is no better time than now to find out.

Downtown Belleville is quickly becoming a very healthy neighbourhood. Already a walking destination with the Riverside Trail and door-to-door boutique shopping, we are seeing an increase of gyms, natural product stores and dance academies in our midst.

Most recently the Belleville Downtown Improvement Area (BDIA) is excited to welcome Your FITT to downtown Belleville now located at 314 Pinnacle St., Unit 4, above Moira Glass.

This fitness facility is all about the family atmosphere. It’s fun, friendly, non-judgmental and incredibly supportive. It’s everything owner Meredith Leadbeater wanted it to be and more since starting the business in 2011.

“We understand that life happens and create programs and packages to accommodate it,” says Leadbeater.

“At Your FITT we aim to be an affordable and fun exercise facility for all. It’s like a fitness family, where we work out, but have so much fun you almost forget you’re working out at all.”

Meredith has been in the fitness field since 2004 and graduated top of her class in the Fitness and Health Promotion Program at Loyalist College. She’s certified with the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, Canadian Fitness Education Services, Zumba and Piloxing and was previously a lab instructor at Loyalist College for 3 years.

At Your FITT, Classes range from Zumba to “Losing It” (a total body workout) to Vinyasa Yoga; genuinely something for everyone. However, after meeting with the owner, we at the BDIA were most intrigued by a class we had never heard of before called “Piloxing”.

Piloxing is the fusion of boxing and Pilates. In just 1 hour you can burn up to 900 calories and continue to burn for a whole 12 hours afterwards! It increases cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, core strength, balance and body awareness. Not to mention the stress relief.

Currently they are in the midst of developing a morning workout schedule. The instructors are geared up and ready to go, but they want to hear from you. What kind of classes does Belleville want in the morning? 6:30 in the morning, do you feel like power yoga? Cardio and core? Sculpt and tone? The option is yours! We encourage you to visit their website for more information: http://www.yourfitt.ca/

Having taken classes with Meredith, I can vouch that it is a fun place to be! The people who attend these classes leave with a smile on their face. It’s a community of people who aren’t just there to get fit and stay healthy, but to enjoy their time while they are there.

During Zumba classes you don’t have to worry about “feeling silly” dancing about, because everyone else there is giggling while they dance about too. Bootcamp classes go by quickly as everyone keeps the conversation going and talks about just about everything but the bootcamp whooping you’re experiencing! Now the curiosity has peaked and I’m sure you will see us attending a piloxing class very soon.

The fitness experience in downtown is a vast and varied one. Your FITT is another wonderful addition for our downtown core. Stay tuned for new exciting fitness ventures with Meredith Leadbeater in 2016 and at upcoming events. Meredith is already incredibly active in community activities and local charities; she regularly educates the Belleville community and participates in workshops with local schools. We are very excited to welcome her into our downtown.

To keep informed on your downtown village, we encourage you to visit the BDIA website at www.downtownbelleville.ca and sign up for our bi-weekly newsletter. Keep informed with what is going on in your downtown! See you soon in downtown Belleville!

Erica Holgate is the office and events coordinator for the BDIA.
