ON CAMPUS: Career fair a huge success

Article content

Prepared. Professional. Passionate.

That’s what many of the employers at Loyalist College’s 20th Annual Career Fair had to say about the Loyalist students and graduates they met on Wednesday, February 1.

“It’s rewarding to receive positive feedback from employers about the professionalism of our students and graduates,” said Francine Short, Alumni and Career Services Officer at Loyalist. “It solidifies what we already know—that the Career Fair is a valuable part of the Loyalist experience and that the education the College provides prepares our grads for boundless career opportunities.”

With 85 registered employers, this Career Fair was one of the largest in its 20-year history. With more than 500 people in attendance, the energy surging throughout the College was infectious.

“When you put employers and potential candidates in a room, networking happens instantly,” said Short. “Employers come to the Career Fair to fill positions; they know what they’re looking for in a candidate. Watching Loyalist students who are about to become graduates introduce themselves to companies they see themselves working for, makes us proud.”

Before the Career Fair begins, employers receive a warm welcome from Loyalist Career Centre staff, who facilitate the event, and Loyalist Public Relations (PR) students who greet employers and guide them to their booths.

“We’re the first point of contact,” said Steven Schill, a post-graduate PR student. “We get to personally meet every employer and learn about them as we help them set up their displays. By the time the Fair starts, we can assist guests effectively by relaying what we’ve learned.”

PR students are also the first to greet guests. Running the Information Booth, they distribute booklets, help visitors understand the layout of the Fair and, when asked, give a few tips on how to make a memorable impression.

“Being authentic and genuine is the way to go,” said Schill. “When we’re approaching employers, we bring our personal brand with us. We’re marketing ourselves. Whatever you do, do it with confidence, passion and care.”

At the end of the Career Fair, employers have the opportunity to fill out a Participant Evaluation Form. It’s an important way for The Career Centre to gather feedback and take note of ways to improve for future events.

“This was a great opportunity to showcase our positions. We were able to pass along information about placements and jobs to students who didn’t know we had opportunities available to them,” said a delegate from the Ministry of the Attorney General.

A representative from McIntosh Perry Consulting Engineers Ltd. said, “This Career Fair is not limited to just taking résumés, but to making connections with graduates while hopefully encouraging them to pursue new opportunities and inspiring them to be job-ready.”

The 21st Annual Career Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, February 7, 2018. Loyalist College thanks all of the employers who participated this year and we look forward to welcoming even more employers next year.
