A group of Loyalist College public relations post-graduate students is helping to bring healthy food to schools in Hastings and Prince Edward counties by hosting the first-ever Apple a Day event at the Quinte Mall.
On Saturday, March 11, residents are invited to visit the Quinte Mall Community Booth between 9:30 a.m and 6 p.m. to purchase an apple for $2. Kids are also welcome to drop by to pick up a colouring page and to take pictures at a fun photo booth. The event proceeds will be donated to Food for Learning, a local program that supports student nutrition programs throughout the region.
“Every student needs nutritious food to thrive in the classroom and to learn,” said Dan Schell, a Loyalist College public relations student and one of the coordinators of Apple a Day. “With this event, we hope to raise awareness of the need for healthy food in our local schools, while supporting the great work being done by Food for Learning to provide proper nutrition to kids in the community.”
Food for Learning helps students get that needed boost of nutrition by providing breakfast, lunch and healthy snack programs in schools. Each year, Food for Learning provides more than one million meals to more than 15,000 students at 80 sites throughout Hastings and Prince Edward counties.
“Children should not be going to school hungry and we are thankful to the Loyalist College Public Relations team who recognized the need to address this,” said Vicky Struthers, community development, special events and grants coordinator with Food for Learning. “We appreciate their commitment to help students reach their full learning potential by eliminating hunger as a barrier to learning – and maybe as a result, some of the local kids will follow in their path to post-secondary education.”
