ON CAMPUS: New equipment advances program

Students in Loyalist College’s Esthetics and Spa Management program received exciting news when they started classes in September. New medical spa equipment had arrived and it was being worked into the curriculum.
“The latest industry trend is for estheticians to seek a medical spa certificate after graduation,” said Melanie Kennedy, a professor in the college’s program. “We’re ahead of the curve. We’ve integrated medical spa equipment training into our program. For future estheticians, this is great news.”
Medical spa equipment focuses on laser hair removal, intense pulsed light and photo-rejuvenation of the skin. Estheticians are often hired to do these types of non-invasive treatments on clients. Now that the esthetics program has this equipment incorporated within its two-year diploma, it’s not necessary for graduates to pursue additional training.
The new Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) machine focuses on acne, photo-rejuvenation and permanent hair reduction.
“You can get some really good results with this machine that you can’t get with a regular facial,” she said. “This type of equipment has been around for years, but it’s gaining in popularity because people want to do more for their skin, without having to undergo surgery procedures. They don’t want to do anything too invasive. That’s why these treatments are very popular.”
The Sonciator uses ultrasound technology. It increases blood and lymphatic circulation.
“It gets your skin cells to function better,” she said. “It can help slow down internal aging and get cells re-energizing. You’ll see firming of the skin. It even helps with fat cell reduction. It’s a really comfortable treatment and you see results almost instantly, as there’s a firming and glowing of the skin. Ultrasound has been around for a while, but this particular machine is one of the best in the industry.”
Students will learn how to use the new medical spa equipment in their body treatment, advanced skin care and advanced facials courses. The equipment will also be incorporated into treatments at The Spa, a state-of-the-art training facility located at Loyalist which operates in collaboration with regional esthetics and spa management industry partners.
The Spa supports contemporary training in skin, nail and body care therapies available in Ontario and acts as a meeting point for the industry’s premier guest educators from across North America. Leading spa and salon owners, aroma therapists, and high fashion nail and make-up artists regularly share their knowledge and experience with both current students and alumni to help them stay ahead of industry trends. Education is always the focus of a spa appointment at Loyalist, and clients can expect to receive an in-depth consultation regarding at-home skin, body and nail care regimes when they visit.
