Photograph of the year was taken by Jordan Verlage, 2005 Loyalist Photojournalism graduate, for The Canadian Press.

QUOTES

“The greatest skills with which I am leaving the program are communications and problem solving, whether it’s with photography or people. I ultimately want to be a powerful storyteller. I want my photography to be a way for me to meet different people and partner with them to tell their story.” –Hannah Yoon, Loyalist College Photojournalism student

“The Loyalist Photojournalism program was a great foundation for my career. Even before graduating, you make invaluable industry contacts and connect with a professional network of other photojournalists and photo editors. As a photographer, I’ve recorded history, influenced public opinion and witnessed life and death. Working as a photojournalist is a privilege that comes with the great responsibility of being accurate and honest to both the people you are reporting on and those you are reporting to.” – John Lehmann, The Globe and Mail’s west coast staff photojournalist, based in Vancouver

“It’s always an honour to be recognized for your work, whether it’s a first place award or a nomination. There is a wealth of talented photojournalists doing some fantastic work in Canada, and elsewhere – many of them Loyalist graduates like myself – so to be listed among them is quite humbling. This year’s nomination as Photojournalist of the Year and my Sports Feature award, combined with the opportunity to meet new photographers and see their winning images, inspires me to work hard to produce memorable images every day. Photojournalism is going through a transitory phase but the desire and impact of great photojournalism has never been stronger.” – Peter Power, 1989 Loyalist Photojournalism graduate

“To have so many of our graduates and students recognized nationally at such a prestigious awards ceremony makes us very proud. The diversity of their skills is reflected in the wide range of award categories through which they are recognized, ranging from general and spot news to pictorial and portrait. As photojournalism continues to evolve, Loyalist is at the forefront of training students with the optimal skill set to become first-rate, multi-platform content creators.” – Loyalist College President Maureen Piercy
