Belleville, Ontario, June 9, 2017 – At the final 50th Anniversary 2017 Convocation Ceremony on the afternoon of June 9, Loyalist College recognized individuals with the presentation of 548 Ontario College Advanced Diplomas, Diplomas and Certificates and Loyalist College Certificates to graduates in the School of Media, Arts + Design and the School of Continuing Education. The ceremony was the fourth, recognizing a total of 1,819 graduates.

Cobourg native Paul Ferguson, a 1995 Loyalist Radio Broadcasting graduate, delivered the Convocation address. Mr. Ferguson is the Program Director at Belleville’s country music station Cool 100.1 FM and 95.5 Hits FM and a three-time consecutive winner of the Canadian Country Music Association’s Music Director of the Year (Medium or Small Market) Award. He was most recently presented the Award in September 2016. Mr. Ferguson is a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Country Music Association and the Board of Directors for the Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation.

“I have no idea where life is going to take you or what you will experience along the way,” said Mr. Ferguson. “I think that’s the most exciting part of this whole day. You’ve finished this chapter of the book, and congratulations! The rest of it is filled with blank pages … Never give up on your dreams, and in order to reach them, you’ll make mistakes. Be accountable for them. Learn from them. Be better for having made them.”

Chair of the Loyalist Board of Governors June Hagerman presented Mr. Ferguson with an Honorary Diploma, in recognition of his distinguished career as a radio broadcast personality and his contributions to his community through the many organizations and initiatives he supports. Mr. Ferguson was also the recipient of the Hugh P. O’Neil Outstanding Alumni Award, presented by Mrs. Pat Tripp, sister of the late Hugh O’Neil, and by Loyalist President Ann Marie Vaughan, in recognition of his professional and community contributions.

Valedictorian Heather Williams, 2017 Loyalist Public Relations graduating student and 2016-2017 Student Government President, addressed the College’s final graduating class.

“I would like to say thank you to all the people who have supported me throughout this journey of post-secondary education – the staff who have turned into friends and the friends who have turned into family,” she said. “Most importantly, thank you Loyalist, for becoming a home away from home and a community in which everyone can feel included.”
