LOYALIST COLLEGE AND GREEN TERRA HOMES ANNOUNCE FACILITY-USE AGREEMENT

September 04, 2015

Energy-efficient modular prefab homes builder to host DIY workshops,
seminars and training courses on Loyalist campus

Belleville, Ontario, September 4, 2015 — Loyalist College and Green Terra Homes (GTH) are pleased to announce a facility-use agreement for the delivery of GTH’s do-it-yourself (DIY) workshops, seminars and non-credit training courses on Loyalist campus for individuals wishing to construct their own home, cottage or garage.

GTH is a Trenton-based company that builds steel-framed and energy-efficient modular prefab homes, bunkies, sheds, barns, stables, garages and cabin kits. GTH’s goal is to help Ontario families to build their dream home by making the home building process more convenient, simple and fun.

Thanks to community partners Quinte Economic Development Commission (QEDC), Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), and Trenval Business Development Corporation, a plan was formulated for the development of a consortium agreement for GTH’s use of Loyalist’s facilities to offer monthly workshops.

“Our business model projects that the workshops will generate revenue over the next three years, once they reach peak operational capacity,” says Green Terra Homes Chief Executive Officer Holly Khani. “We have pledged revenue from our hands-on workshops to Loyalist.”

A variety of monthly workshops are anticipated to start in the fall. GTH will be responsible for registration and scheduling, while Loyalist will provide an assembly space and classrooms to accommodate upward of 40 participants. The average workshop fee is $300. Homes and structures constructed through the workshops will be donated to Loyalist.

“This partnership with Green Terra Homes is a testament to Loyalist’s commitment to provide and promote experiential learning within the community, and to the outstanding quality of our learning facilities,” says Loyalist College President and CEO Maureen Piercy. “It reflects the benefit of working and strengthening ties with our partners in the business community, QEDC, Trenval, and BDC.”

“Though Loyalist students may not participate in Green Terra workshops, they will benefit from exposure to GTH’s different types of sustainable buildings,” says Dean of Applied Sciences, Skills and Technology Ann Drennan.

The Quinte Economic Development Commission values the contribution that Loyalist brings to new and existing businesses in the QEDC region.

“Loyalist College continues to be a strong partner with economic development and the business community,” says QEDC Chief Executive Officer Chris King. “This new partnership will provide training support to potential purchasers of GTH’s steel-framed building kits and create potential synergies between GTH and Loyalist post-secondary programs and students.”
