LOYALIST COLLEGE CONGRATULATES 2015 NURSING SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT

August 28, 2015

Autumne Beth awarded this year’s $5,000 Brock University-Loyalist College
Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing Scholarship

Belleville, Ontario, August 27, 2015 — Loyalist College is pleased to congratulate Autumne Beth, recipient of the 2015 Brock University-Loyalist College Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing Scholarship. The $5,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the Brock-Loyalist Nursing program who has demonstrated a high level of academic achievement in the first two years at Loyalist.

Autumne, who is from Newcastle, Ontario, is also the recipient of the Audrey I. Williams Nursing Bursary in recognition of her academic excellence in the first year of the Collaborative Baccalaureate program, as well as the Dame Sylvia Burkinshaw Memorial Bursary, sponsored by St. John Ambulance and based on high academic achievement.

“I enjoyed reading your essay and I loved your metaphor about falling in love with nursing, your career and your profession,” President and CEO Maureen Piercy told Autumne during the award presentation on August 26. “I know that you will represent us and yourself very well and will be very successful in your transition to Brock. We hope you will keep in touch. We look forward to hearing about your success in future years as you move forward. Congratulations!”

Autumne will continue her studies at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario this fall. She was surprised to have a call from Dean of the School of Health, Human and Justice Studies Karen Brooks-Cathcart during the summer to advise her that she had been selected as this year’s recipient. Prior to enrolling in the Brock-Loyalist Nursing program, Autumne earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Minor in Theatre at the University of Ottawa.

“It was definitely overwhelming,” she said. “With the number of students in our class who are really, really talented and are definitely in the right program, it was definitely a challenge. I finished my degree in Ottawa thinking ‘there is something missing; I want to go more into the medical field’. I thought, ‘why not start with nursing’, and I absolutely love it.”

In March 2015 — for the second consecutive time — the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing Accreditation Bureau awarded a seven-year accreditation status to the Brock-Loyalist Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing program. Students spend the first two years at Loyalist and the final two years at Brock University, to graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing awarded by Brock.
