LOYALIST COLLEGE LAUNCHES THE APPLIED RESEARCH CENTRE FOR NATURAL PRODUCTS AND MEDICAL CANNABIS

January 23, 2018

Belleville, Ontario, January 23, 2018 – Loyalist College is pleased to announce the opening of the Applied Research Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis (ARC), an 1,800-square-foot state-of-the-art laboratory which builds on the success of Loyalist’s Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction Applied Research Laboratory.

“Loyalist has a highly successful 13-year, industry-driven track record of natural product extraction and analysis-based applied research,” said Ann Marie Vaughan, Loyalist College President & CEO. “The College has contributed $950,000 to the ARC to enhance lab extraction and analytical equipment, an investment which will truly set Loyalist apart.”

In January 2017, Loyalist received approval from Health Canada for a Controlled Drugs and Substances Licence for the purpose of research and analysis using medical cannabis. Currently, Loyalist is the only College in Canada and the only Ontario academic institution to have a laboratory approved to conduct research activities with cannabis under the Narcotic Control Regulations, as listed on the Government of Canada’s website.

The ARC will provide industry with access to a hub of resources and expertise in clean technologies, including innovative supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) extraction, analytical technologies and analysis of commercially relevant biologically active compounds, with applications in the food and beverage industry, functional food and natural health products, and medical cannabis industry.
