Loyalist College Presents 326 Awards at the Annual Undergraduate Awards Ceremony

November 07, 2014

Belleville, Ontario, November 6, 2014 – Loyalist College is pleased to announce that 326 awards worth a total of over $196,000 were presented to 271 Loyalist students during the Annual Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on November 6.

“Financial assistance makes a difference to our students as they continue with their post-secondary education, so we would like to say ‘thank you’ to the many donors who have made this opportunity possible,” said Loyalist College President and CEO Maureen Piercy. “This network of generosity, encouragement and support allows our students to achieve their goals. There is a genuine human connection between them and our donors, whose message is: ‘This is important to your life. Congratulations. Keep up the good work. Continue to reach for your goals.’”

The Loyalist College Foundation provided more than $162,000 of the total, including one new bursary. The Foundation was established in 1995 to provide leadership in meeting the goals for long-term development and fundraising to benefit the students and programs at Loyalist College. The remaining amount is donated by individuals, businesses, and community organizations, with two new awards this year.

“It’s wonderful to see the growth in this awards program year-over-year,” said Loyalist College Board of Governors Chair Brian Smith. “Many of the awards presented were provided through the College Foundation endowment, an investment which provides important support for Loyalist College students today, and will continue to provide such support through the future. I would like to thank the many donors who make this program possible – and in particular – the work of the College Foundation Board, whose members play an important role in supporting Loyalist and our students.”

New awards were presented to students for the first time, including:

  • Angela Davies Memorial Bursary to Brittany Dhaene, first-year Practical Nursing
  • Enactus Canada’s Founder’s Bursary to Jeremy Meyer, second-year Business, Sales and Marketing
  • Sir Mackenzie Bowell Award to Samantha Reed, second-year Journalism – Online, Print and Broadcast

“It’s an honour to receive these awards and to be recognized for the effort I have put forth,” said Katelyn Iles, third-year Business Administration student and recipient of the Linda & Roli Tipper Bursary, Joe Roberts – Courage to Change Bursary, and the Freedom 55 Financial Award. “When I found out, I was overwhelmed. It has proven that I can reach my potential. The money I’ve received will go directly toward paying for my studies. My time at Loyalist has been a positive experience, and I have gained extraordinary knowledge and created lifelong relationships with many wonderful people.”
