LOYALIST COLLEGE RECEIVES FIRST BOOK ABOUT MÉTIS VETERANS

January 21, 2016

Belleville, Ontario, January 13, 2016 – Loyalist College is the first post-secondary institution to receive a copy of Fighting for Canada Before there was a Canada, a book produced by the Métis Nation of Ontario Veterans’ Council.

Guy Mandeville, Vice President of the Council, visited the Aboriginal Resource Centre at Loyalist to present a copy. “This is the first book ever produced about Métis veterans in Ontario,” he said.

Paul Latchford, Aboriginal Resource Centre Manager at Loyalist congratulated the group on its efforts to share stories from Métis veterans.

“All of this information is accessible, but this group has taken the initiative to bring it together. This book is a wonderful resource for Loyalist faculty, staff and students.”

Mandeville has been affiliated with Loyalist since 2008 and is encouraged by the services offered in the Aboriginal Resource Centre. “They are doing excellent work, even non-Aboriginal students come in and use the facilities, and the idea is to encourage all students to educate themselves about Aboriginal history.”

Fighting for Canada Before there was a Canada covers Métis veterans’ experiences in combat and non-combat roles when serving at home and overseas.

About the Métis Nation of Ontario Veterans’ Council
In 2001 under the direction of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO), the Métis Nation of Ontario Veterans’ Council (MNOVC) was formed. MNOVC can be reached at: mnovc@rogers.com.

About the Aboriginal Resource Centre
Established at Loyalist to ensure appropriate support for Native students on campus and to act as a liaison between College administration, Native communities and government agencies, the orientation of the Aboriginal Resource Centre is holistic in its approach. A large portion of the Native population consists of young adults who require a college education. However, many Native students find the adjustment to college a difficult process. This transition is made easier through the friendship, assistance and services provided by the Centre.
