LOYALIST COLLEGE STUDENTS RECEIVE CANADIAN WELDING ASSOCIATION (CWA) FOUNDATION AWARDS

March 17, 2016

Belleville, Ontario, March 17, 2016 — Loyalist College is pleased to announce that two second-year Welding and Fabrication Technician students have received a Canadian Welding Association (CWA) Foundation Post-Secondary School Award in the amount of $2,500. Recipients were selected based on academic excellence and/or their passion for the industry.

“With this award I can further my education and enhance my welding skills,” said Loyalist Welding and Fabrication Technician student Nicholas Paiva. “It will enable me to learn more about the trade.”

The CWA Foundation established this award program in 2014 with the intent of promoting and encouraging the pursuit of post-secondary education in welding.

“Winning this national award has been a great confidence builder,” said Loyalist Welding and Fabrication Technician student Nicholas Companion. “I love the program and my professors have been extremely supportive, which has been key to my academic success. I am honoured to have been chosen as a recipient of this award.”

“We’re very proud of our students who have been recognized by the Canadian Welding Association Foundation,” said Ann Drennan, Dean, Loyalist College School of Applied Sciences, Skills and Technology. “Through experiential learning in our Skills Centre, they have gained a strong theoretical and practical welding skill set that they can apply in manufacturing, construction, fabrication and industrial mechanics (millwright), among other industries.”

Nicholas Companion and Nicholas Paiva are also W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellows, part of a skilled trades Fellowship program that began as a pilot project at Loyalist College in 2013. Funded by The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, the Fellowship provides up to $4,000 plus a tuition credit in welding, electrical, manufacturing, automotive or construction renovation programs. Fellowship applications for the fall semester are available at loyalistcollege.com. Application deadline for Apprentices – July 31; Post-Secondary – August 22, 2016.
