All mayoral candidates in Belleville have been invited to participate in the event, which will feature a short speech from each candidate followed by questions from the floor. The moderator will also relay questions from the public submitted through social media.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for our students to cover the debate across multiple platforms as it’s happening,” says Kathleen Bazkur, Acting Dean of Media, Arts + Design. “Students in our Journalism – Online, Print and Broadcast program will build on the community engagement they began with the ‘Your Voice, Your Vote’ project. Contributing to an informed, engaged electorate prepares our students to enter newsrooms across North America as cognizant, critically aware and highly technically skilled graduates.”

“Hands-on experience in Loyalist’s fully integrated newsroom enables our students to produce top-quality coverage,” adds Eric Howard, Coordinator of Television and New Media Production at Loyalist. “Our students will videotape the candidates addressing the issues and broadcast it live for public consumption.”

Third-year Journalism student Greg Murphy is looking forward to the debate. “I think that this event will be a pivotal moment in my education. Everything we’ve been learning will now come into practice. It’s nerve-racking, but at the same time, I’m feeling optimistic. My classmates and I will do our best to produce the most comprehensive election coverage for the citizens of Belleville.”

Members of the public are invited to attend the debate in Alumni Hall or participate online at qnetnews.ca. For more information about programs in the School of Media, Arts + Design, visit loyalistcollege.com.
