The Loyalist Lancers Men’s Rugby Team has captured the title of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Division II Provincial Champions for the third consecutive year. On Saturday, November 12th they claimed a 15 – 7 victory over the Algonquin Thunder, preceded by an undefeated 6-0 season.
Following the game, second-year player Luke Shillington was named Man of the Match, with five points for the Lancers. First-year player Connor McCann won the OCAA regular season scoring title and was named to the OCAA Division II All Star team along with teammate Jesse Gunter. Loyalist President Maureen Piercy presented the medals and awards.
“The players and coaching team have brought honour to Loyalist through attaining prominence in this sport through their self-discipline, sportsmanship and commitment,” said President Maureen Piercy. “Congratulations to each player for games well executed and to the coaching team of Larry Cook, Rob Cooke, Pat Dockrill, Warren McCann and Devin Metzger for their leadership and dedication.”
Jim Buck, Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation, praised the team and the coaches for the example they have set for the Loyalist community. “When a team remains on top for three consecutive years it is because of their commitment, hard work and pride, not only in themselves but in the College community. The victory banners will hang in the Loyalist gymnasium and we hope that they will be a proud reminder of this achievement when these players return to campus as alumni in ten year’s time.”
