Loyalist Offers Diploma Program for Nursing Graduates in India

May 03, 2011

Loyalist College is pleased to announce that it will be offering an Applied Health Administration program through the College’s School of Continuing Education. The program has been specifically designed for practical and B.Sc. nurses who have trained and graduated from English nursing programs in India and would like to build upon their skills in preparation for employment in Canadian medical offices. Students will develop strong medical office practices, and enhanced interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

The program will be delivered over five semesters starting in May 2011.  Additional cohorts will begin in September 2011 and January 2012. The first semester will be completed through online studies at one of the following three colleges in India: Kular College of Nursing, Sri Guru Harkrisan Sahib College of Nursing, and Silver Oaks College of Nursing. The four remaining semesters will be completed in a classroom setting in Canada at Loyalist College. During the final semester students will gain hands-on practical experience in standard operational procedures through a 120-hour medical office placement in Belleville, Bancroft or Toronto. Those who successfully complete the five semesters will be eligible to remain and work in Canada for an additional three years with a post-graduate work permit.

Trudie Lake, Continuing Education Manager at Loyalist College, explained that the program is offered in a series of levels. “Following successful completion of the first semester, students receive a Health Services Receptionist letter of completion. Subsequent semesters add further credentials enabling students to graduate from the five-semester program with Health Records Clerk and Hospital Ward Clerk certificates, and an Office Administration–Medical diploma. The graduates will then be prepared to work in a range of medical office environments including dental, optical, physician, chiropractic and veterinary settings. These professionals from India will study and work in Canada while experiencing our culture and the excitement of international travel.”

“This innovative program will certainly enhance the opportunity for international students to obtain high quality education here in Canada,” said John McMahon, Loyalist College, Vice-President Academic. “We look forward to working with the students and helping them achieve their educational and career goals.”
