Loyalist Student Government Actively Addresses Needs and Concerns of the Student Community

November 16, 2010

Again this year, the Loyalist Student Government is working hard to ensure that its activities reflect the input of the student body. These efforts enhance the quality of student life with a positive impact on the academic, social and general well-being of the College as a whole.

The students’ recognition of sustainability issues, and their desire to contribute to the solution, has resulted in the installation of three new hydration stations to reduce the consumption of bottled water. Hands-free and sensor-operated, the digital display at each station serves as a powerful motivator, reporting the decrease in water bottle usage. More stations are scheduled for installation. Water bottles were presented to students and staff this fall, an initiative made possible with Student Government contributions. In addition, the Student Government has installed more recycling bins and posters which are located across the campus and also hosts an annual Green Week with events such as Recycle a Book, Lug-a-Mug Days, and Think Before You Ink.

The Student Government has a long history of contributing to campus life and academic success including SAL (Student Access Lab) and the Shark Tank Pub in the student activity centre. It has managed and funded the extensive renovation and upgrading of the Health Centre; the construction of the Food on the Run Café in the Pioneer Building; the creation of two quiet rooms for student study areas; and the furnishing of numerous student lounge areas. The installation of classroom Smart Boards and hand sanitizers across the campus are also initiatives the Student Government has contributed to.

Nancy File, Office Manager for the Loyalist Student Government, stated that of all the valuable contributions the Student Government has made during the past four years, the remodeling of the Health Centre is the one that stands out most to her. “The transformation was amazing and so important for the students. It was a huge undertaking and the results were perfect. The students can now receive health care by the College nurse and doctor in up-to-date, patient-friendly surroundings.”

The Student Government President, Ryan Scott, is a graduate of the Loyalist General Arts and Science program, and currently is a third-year student in the Child and Youth Worker program. “Students come to Loyalist for academic programs but it is important for them to be comfortable in their surroundings. We’re here to listen, prioritize and put plans into action, a responsibility we take very seriously.”

“The Student Government is extremely motivated and focused on student needs,” said Fred Pollitt, Director, Student Life. “They’re constantly developing new projects to enhance the quality of student life on campus and they sincerely represent the best interests of their constituents. It’s a pleasure to work with them.”
