Loyalist College Open House Great Success

November 05, 2009

On November 3rd Loyalist College opened its doors to welcome over 1,700 high school students and members of the community — showcasing over 60 career-focused programs and the wide range of campus facilities. Visitors had the opportunity to explore the campus, including the residence village, and take part in interactive exhibits. Some of the activities included nail treatments by the Esthetician and Spa Management students, samples of the Culinary students’ creations and meeting Baby Sim from the Nursing simulation lab.

Two friends from Bayside Secondary School, Kayla Poirier and Sara Beaudrie, attended the Open House together.

“I’ve been to the campus once before and today was great,” said Sara. “We’ve been able to find out so much about so many different programs by talking to the faculty and students. There are a lot of programs here that I didn’t know about. Everyone is so outgoing and I really like that. I’m going to take the Loyalist Social Service Worker program — I found it really helpful talking to SSW teachers.”

Kayla Poirier echoed Sara’s thoughts and added, “My goal is to work in a penitentiary as a guard so I want to take the Community and Justice Services Worker program. I have two friends who have taken the program here and they really liked it. Being able to live at home and go to college will save me a lot of money — which I think is great.”

“There are many reasons why I plan to enroll in Loyalist’s Police Foundations program in January. Something that I really like is the fact that the students who graduate from the program get jobs,” said Lucas Shillington from Moira Secondary School. “I’ve also heard that fitness is a big part of the program and that’s important to me. I’ve played running back for the Moira Trojans throughout high school so to be able to stay in shape as part of my studies really appeals to me. I’m not the only one in my family planning to start at Loyalist in January. My mom is going to take the Personal Support Worker program — so with some car pooling and being able to live at home, college will be much more affordable.”

Loyalist has a full range of success services to assist students from all walks of life to achieve a successful college experience and employment in their field of choice. The college is committed to helping potential students find the program that’s right for them and ensuring that they achieve their goals.
