Apprenticeship is a workplace-based training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade. About 90% of apprenticeship training occurs in the workplace under the supervision of skilled trades-people, while the remainder involves classroom instruction, usually at a post-secondary institution or other approved training organization. Apprentices may also be eligible for Apprenticeship Grants (Apprenticeship Incentive Grant and Apprenticeship Completion Grant).
Employers can benefit from taking on an apprentice. In addition to having a dedicated employee and investing in training skilled people; there could also be financial incentives; such as Employer Signing Bonus and Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit .
Currently a high school student and interested in skilled trades? You can start an apprenticeship early with the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program. For more information, see your high school Guidance or Co-op Department!
