Counselling Services
Loyalist College recognizes that education plays an important role in the improvement and enhancement of every individual throughout their life.
The mission of Counselling Services is to foster the personal growth and development of Loyalist College students. By providing interventions in a safe and supportive environment, our staff strive to maximize the potential of all students by assisting them in acquiring the skills, attitudes, abilities, and insights that will enable them to meet academic and life challenges. The supports provided encourage personal and community responsibility, and promote the wellness of the whole student: emotional, social, spiritual, intellectual, and physical. Staff members of the department also act as a resource to faculty and staff of Loyalist College.
Personal Counselling sessions are:
- Confidential - This means that the information revealed by you stays between you and the Counsellor. Your faculty and your family and friends will not know about the sessions unless you choose to tell them.
- Free - Counselling Services are free of charge to all students.
- Without obligation to continue - You do not have to come more than once but you can come back if you feel it was helpful.
- Self-directed - The Counsellor does not require you to talk about any particular issue but will help you try to decide what is most important.
It is a good idea to speak to a Counsellor if:
- You have a problem that does not seem to go away or is getting worse.
- You have tried several solutions and they are not working.
- You are referred by a caring friend, family member, faculty, or other person you respect.
- Your grades are dropping or are far lower than what you expect of yourself.
- You have trouble sleeping, are experiencing mood swings, bad dreams or cannot concentrate.
- Memories of past events upset you.
- Your self-confidence or self-esteem feels under threat.
What sorts of problems and issues are dealt with?
There are many issues students bring to counselling, but the list can include matters such as anger, depression, feeling out of control, overwhelming stress, an inability to put limits on substance use or other addictions, sexual or other assault, abuse and mental illness.
