Women's Volleyball |
This past weekend brought games for all 4 of our indoor teams, making it the perfect weekend to support the OCAA Play for a Cure Campaign. The women’s volleyball team had pink in their hair while the men’s team sported pink shoe laces and both teams came out with a win! They took to the court again Saturday where the women lost 3 games straight and the men defeated the Cambrian Golden Shield 3-2. After the game both the volleyball and basketball teams participated in a spaghetti dinner prepared by our very own Andrée Mathurin. All donations received went directly towards Andrée’s fight against Breast Cancer. Both teams are looking for wins this weekend when they take on La Cité Coyotes Friday night and Algonquin Thunder Saturday at 1:00 & 3:00 pm
The basketball teams took to the court Sunday with the girls wearing pink t-shirts and the boys in blue to pr
omote prostate cancer awareness. Despite a hard fight, the girls lost 56-41 to the Georgian Grizzlies. Calvin Chevannes and Trevor Mayer were the big scorers of the night with a combined total of 32 points pushing the score to 71-65.
After a well deserved break for the holiday season, the Lancers are back! The Men's Basketball team kicked off the season with the home court advantage at our annual New Year’s Classic Men's Basketball Tournament. The boys played hard throughout the tournament but lost in the Championship game to the Fleming Knights of Peterborough. First year Brenden Birkens and second year Calvin Chevannes were named tournament all-stars.
The Women's Basketball team travelled to Kingston to the St. Lawrence (K) Invitational tournament. They dropped their opening game 45-43 to the Nouvelles Frontières, then went on to beat the host team in a hard fought 45-35 point victory. After staying on top of the scoreboard the majority of the third game, Sainte-Foy player Genevieve Lachance hit a 3 point shot on the buzzer to take the game to overtime where the Sainte-Foy Dynamiques beat the Lancers 54-47.
The Women's Volleyball team travelled to Durham College for the annual Killer Instinct Tournament. The first game saw the girls take on the Sheridan Bruins, losing the first set 25-20, then rallying back to win the next 25-10. The team kept the winning streak going beating Seneca Sting 25-12, 25-5 then the Fleming Knights 25-12, 25-14. They split the 4th game against Niagara Knights winning the first set 25-18 and then losing 25-23. The number one ranked Humber Hawks beat our girls 3 games straight leaving them to face off against Mohawk Mountaineers in semi-finals. Mohawk beat the Lancers 3 games straight. Former and future Lancers gathered on Saturday November 13, 2010 for some basketball, storytelling and a lot of laughs at the Men’s Basketball Annual Alumni Game. Team Blue defeated Team White in a very close and entertaining game. Thanks to all who attended and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year.

Brittany Denneny and Kyle DonnanAthletes of the Year |
It’s been a long and eventful season for all four of our Lancer teams. There were records broken, expectations exceeded and awards won. Here is a recap of the four teams remaining in Semester 2.
They had a bit of a slow start, but by the Christmas break there was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Lancer’s volleyball teams were a force to be reckoned with. From Kyle Donnan’s powerful swing that pushed him to the top of the leader board in OCAA to Mandi Buma’s record setting serves, it was a year of unforgettable moments for both teams. Unfortunately, all of this came to a halt after two devastating losses in one day.
|
First, the women’s team lost the crossover match to the Sheridan Bruins that would have led them to Provincials. Then after watching the girls struggle, the men’s team came up against the very strong Fanshawe Falcons and unfortunately came away with the same result. Kyle Donnan and Greg Gillespie were both recognized as first team league All Stars at the Ontario College Athletic Association Provincial Championships. |

Starting off with high hopes, the men’s basketball team faced a number of challenges over the course of the season. After picking up a couple late season wins, the team finished their season strong in Ottawa falling just short of the Algonquin Thunder 64-57. he women‘s basketball team knew there would be obstacles to overcome throughout their season, but that never stopped them from giving their all. Strong showings from veterans Dianne Bouder and Brittany Denneny helped push the team throughout their injury plagued season. Denneny fought her way to the top of the leader board for most total rebounds in the East Division.

The Athletic Department used this week’s back to back double header nights to promote Breast Cancer Awareness to their athletes and fans. Both the Basketball and Volleyball teams donned their pink t-shirts for warm up. The coaching staff and all minor officials wore pink on these nights as well. Fans were also encouraged to wear pink to help support this very worthy cause. Money jars were passed around on both nights with several hundred dollars being collected. Andrée Mathurin-Scott was on hand to help out with the festivities. Andrée who works at the College is a breast cancer survivor and is a close friend and great supporter of the Athletic Department and its teams. She used a pink basketball for the ceremonial tip off on Tuesday night and a pink volleyball on Wednesday night for the ceremonial first serve.
Despite great fan support and excellent efforts by the Lancers both Basketball teams dropped their games to the visiting George Brown Huskies. The Women were led by third year forward Brittany Denneny who had 9 points and Katie Ballantyne chipped in with 8 points. The Team trailed by just 2 points at the half against the number two ranked team in the OCAA but struggled offensively in the second half scoring only 10 points. The final score was George Brown 45 Loyalist 29. The Ladies are now 1-2 in league play.

In the second game of the evening the Lancer Men came out playing their best basketball of the young season. Their offense was clicking on all cylinders as they went to the locker room at the half with a 7 point lead. Their lead got as high as 14 points before the full court pressure of the Huskies forced several turnovers and allowed George Brown to tie the score at 59’s at the end of regulation time. Overtime saw George Brown continue their hot shooting and pressure defense. They outscored the Lancers 20-10 in OT to escape with a 79-69 victory. The Lancers fall to 0-3 in league play. Veteran Trevor Mayer had an outstanding game for the Lancers scoring 15 points and adding 8 rebounds. Freshmen guard Damone Donaldson had another strong game with 13 points before fouling out late in the game. The team is now 0-3 in league play.

The volleyball teams fared much better as they swept the visiting Trent Excalibur in fine fashion. The Women made quick work of Trent by winning 3 games to 0 with dominating offense and defense. Scores were 25-13, 25-15, 25-16. Once again Joanne Laton and Rebecca Ramsay were the top point getters with 9 points of total offense each. Ramsay also had 8 kills on the night while Katlin Gagnon displayed her usual defensive tenacity and had a game high 7 digs. The team now sits in 3rd place in the very competitive East region with a 4-2 record.
A very boisterous crowd was on hand for the Men’s action which seemed to pay dividends for the Lancers. Loyalist completely dominated the first game by trouncing Trent by a score of 25-12. It appeared another 3 game sweep was in the cards for the Lancers but Trent managed to steal the second game of the night by a score of 25-18. Coach Templar was able to settle his team down and they went on to win the next two games to take the match 3-1. With the win the Lancers now have an impressive 4-1 record in league play. Kyle Donnan, Matt Woods and Greg Gillespie all had big offensive nights with 21, 17, 13 total offensive points respectively. Luke Leoen got the job done on the defensive end of things with a game high 8 digs.
