It was a tough night for the Loyalist Basketball teams as they travelled to Toronto to take on the George Brown Huskies. The Lancers almost didn’t make it to the games as their bus broke down leaving the team stranded on the highway until they could hail down some taxis to take them the rest of the way.

In the Women’s game a slow start proved costly for the Lancers as they dropped a 78-57 decision to the second place Huskies. Despite trailing by 14 points at the half Loyalist played a solid second half making the game closer then the Huskies would have liked. Once again third year forward Brittany Denneny recorded a double -double with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Katie Ballantyne had a solid night as well chipping in 18 points. The teams record now sits at 3-12 and will travel to the Nation’s Capital on Feb 20th to play the Algonquin Thunder in their final game of the season. With only seven players making the trip to George Brown the Men’s team battled the 10-7 Huskies until the final minutes of the game eventually loosing by a final score of 62-55. Down 7 at the half the Lancers managed to take a one point lead late in the game where turnovers and poor free throw shooting cost them a chance at another victory. Three different Lancers hit double digits in scoring with Trevor Mayer leading the way with 16 points, first year players Damone Donaldson and Calvin Chevannes had 15 and 11 points respectively. The team now falls to 4-14 on the season and will play their final two games of the year in Ottawa on February 19 & 20. |

On Friday, January 9, 2009, Sara Maybee set a single game scoring record for the Loyalist Lancers by pouring in 44 points against her former team as the Lancers defeated the Algonquin Thunder 68 to 55. Assistant Athletic Director, Jim Buck who attended the game said, "Sara was absolutely spectacular scoring every way imaginable." With point guard Erin Rose out of the line up with a knee injury Coach Anderson needed Maybee to not only score but to handle the ball against Algonquin's full court pressure. As a result she was named OCAA "Athlete of the Week". With the win the Lancers climb back to the 500 mark with a 4-4 record. The previous Lancer scoring record was held by Kara Muhlhaussen who scored 36 points in a game during the 2007 season. |
