In one of their biggest games of the year, the Lancer Men started the game slow dropping the first and second set to the Sting. Seneca's #4 Jason Hernandez was in top form leading his team with 18 kills 3 aces and 2 blocks. Having lost the first two sets, it was now or never for the Lancers going into the third set. They got off to a great start taking a quick lead and not letting up. Matt Woods' spin serve proved to be hard to handle racking up 6 aces in the games. Showing how far heart and determination can take a team, the Lancers won the third and fourth set, forcing a fifth and extremely exciting game. Again the Lancers got off to a solid start going up 8-4 at the switch. Curtis Bertelink lit up the court with a series of blocks late in the fifth set that fired up the team and crowd sending Matt Woods back to serve. The killer spin serve stung the Sting yet again and scored the game winning point

The Lancer Men's team took to the court fired up and ready for the challenge of the first place, undefeated Lords. The first set was a battle to the end going point for point with the Lords until the Lancers finished it off 25-22. Matt Woods continued to call the shots and lead his team with smart setting choices and solid defense. Set two played out like the first with both teams throwing up huge blocks, swinging hard and digging well. After another 25-22 set victory, it was starting to look like it could be a three straight win until Durham turned it around and won the third and fourth games 26-24 and 25-17. Going into the fifth game with two wins each and momentum on Durham's side, the Lancers went out swinging and didn't stop. Finishing the game 15-7 clenched the 3-2 decision for the Lancers. |
It was a big night for Lancer volleyball when they hosted the Seneca Sting. The games were kicked off with a ceremony that recognized the senior players from both the men’s and women’s volleyball teams that are in their last year at Loyalist.
From the women’s team,
· 2nd year right side/libero Kaitlin Gagnon
· CCAA Academic All Canadian, 2nd year power hitter Rebecca Ramsay
· CCAA Academic All Canadian 4th year right side/setter Mandi Buma
From the men’s team
· 3rd year right side/ libero Luke Leone
· 3rd year setter/libero Dave Commerford
· 3rd year setter Mark Mullen
We would like to thank these athletes for their dedication and commitment to Lancer athletics, and wish them the best of luck in all their future endeavors.
The women started off the night cruising to a 3 -0 victory, bumping the Sting into 5th place, and sending them on the road for their qualifying match to take on the Mohawk Mountaineers. The win moved our girls into 3rd place, giving them home court advantage for their cross over game against the Sheridan Bruins, set to take place Saturday, February 20th at 1:00 pm.
The girls played at the top of their game and let their potential shine through. The team’s top point earners, Rebecca Ramsay, Joanne Laton and Mandi Buma continued to drive the team forward, but it was the huge blocking efforts by middles Kayla Kuipers and Tiana Gauthier and stellar defense by libero Brittany Gray that helped stop the Sting.
The ladies finished off their regular season play with an impressive record of 15-5, leaving them only behind 1st place Durham Lords and 2nd Place Trent Excalibur.
The boys were looking for revenge after losing 3-0 to the Seneca Sting back in October, and that’s exactly what they did. Lancers won the first game 25-17, lost the second 20-25, then won the next 2 games 25-18 and 25-22. It was a team effort that lead to the victory, Greg Gillespie, Scott Rominiszyn and Dave Commerford held their own offensively, with a combined 6 blocks and 18 kills. Luke Leone played inspired defense, stepping in as libero and robbing the Sting of many kills, and Mark Mullen worked hard and threw off the Sting with his ability to mix up the offensive.
Kyle Donnan continued to be a dominant offensive force for the team, but it was Matt Woods who earned the most points in the match due to a combination of impressive defense and smart offense.

February 10, 2010 The Women’s Volleyball team won their seventh straight match as they travelled to George Brown and defeated the Huskies 3 games to 1. The Lancers now boast a 13-5 record with two matches remaining in their regular season. They will play their final home game on February 17th when they will host the Seneca Sting. Loyalist will be looking for a little revenge as they dropped their very first game of the season to the Sting. It will also be senior night for the team. This is a chance for the Athletic Department to recognize some of their players as they take to the court for the final regular season game as a Lancer. Fourth year player Mandi Buma continues to lead the team in scoring averaging 2.84 scoring stats a game. She also continues to build on her OCAA record of service aces. |
