Destined for the Big Leagues

Playing in front of thousands of screaming fans, family and friends for the biggest game of his life, nothing fazed 26-year-old Akwasi Antwi as he played in the 100th Grey Cup Championship game on Sunday, November 25th.
"It was an amazing feeling," said Akwasi who had 11 special teams tackles for the 2012 season. "It just didn't turn out the way we wanted."
Drafted in 2011 to number 47 as a linebacker for the Calgary Stampeders, Akwasi dressed for all 18 season games, led the Stamps with 17 special teams tackles, six defensive tackles, and one fumble recovery.
Akwasi is proud of his professional football stats, but one can also hear the pride in his voice when he talks about his educational achievements, including graduating from Loyalist College's Customs and Immigration program in 2008. Click here to read more. |

LOYALIST STUDENT #0001 HONOURED BY ROTARY INTERNATIONAL
At a Belleville Rotary Club meeting on November 12th, Charles Benson, who was the first student to register at Loyalist in 1967, was awarded a prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship in recognition of his extensive community service and leadership. Following graduation, Charlie was employed at the College in various positions including College Registrar and College Bursar. An active volunteer in the community, Charlie was a founding member of Belleville Community Policing and has been a member of the Board for the Belleville Volunteer Centre, among other service organizations. |

On November 23rd, the Alumni Association hosted its Annual General Meeting at Club 213. The Alumni Association, representing more than 30,000 graduates of the College, was recognized for its pledge of $150,000 to the Capital Campaign for Loyalist College with the naming of "Alumni Corners" near an entrance-way to the Skills Centre.
After a wonderful dinner, provided by the Culinary Management students, Alumni Distinction Awards were presented to outstanding Loyalist graduates Michael Brethour (Photojournalism, 2003) and Akwasi Antwi (Customs and Immigration, 2008). Employer Recognition Awards, also presented at the event, recognized two organizations for their ongoing promotion and support of Loyalist College: Quinte Broadcasting Company and Bayfield Treatment Centres.

SIX ALUMNI NOMINATED FOR 2012 PREMIER'S AWARDS
The College was pleased to recognize six outstanding graduates nominated for the Premier's Awards program. Ontario College graduates were celebrated and awards announced during the Premier's Awards Gala held November 26th, at the Colleges Ontario Annual Higher Education Summit in Toronto. The nominees were Bob Forder, Charles Mercier, Ken Murphy, Jan Richardson, Kaela Lalonde, and Farzana Wahidy in the categories of Business, Community Services, Creative Arts and Design, Health Sciences, Technology, and Recent Graduate. ALUMNI AND STUDENT COFFEE HOUSE
On November 15th, alumni and students were invited to the Alumni Association's First Annual Coffee House. The event, which featured live music, food and refreshments, was a great way for attendees to relax, connect with old friends and make some new ones. |
COLLEGE WINS 2013 INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMING AWARD
The College received the 2013 International Learning Resources Network (LERN) Award for Programming at the LERN 40th Annual Conference in Washington, DC on November 17th. The winning learning initiative was a virtual food process operator simulation, which provides an immersive, experiential learning experience to Loyalist students in the Process Operator - Food Manufacturing Apprenticeship program. With an avatar in a virtual cookie factory, students virtually explore, learn and react to scenarios they would typically encounter on the job. They choose appropriate safety gear for their avatars and then practise important safety protocols such as powering down equipment, and troubleshooting problems along the assembly line. During the 22nd Annual Undergraduate Awards Ceremony on November 13th, 282 awards worth a total of $160,575 were presented to Loyalist students. For many recipients, the financial assistance they receive makes a significant difference in helping to set them up for success now and in the future when they graduate. The College is offering a January start for the two-year Esthetics and Spa Management diploma program, to meet growing demands for spa services. Keith Taylor, Director of the Quinte Drinking Water Source Protection program, delivered the opening address at Loyalist's Second Annual Model UN Conference on November 23rd. This year, Environmental students considered the issues of water scarcity and scarcity induced conflict. TEDDY BEAR TOSS FOR A GOOD CAUSE
Third-year Child and Youth Worker students organized a Teddy Bear Toss with the Wellington Dukes and the Prince Edward County Fire Department. The group collected bags of new stuffed animals at a Wellington Dukes game and all donations went to the Fire Department, Children's Aid Society's Christmas Angel Campaign and the Salvation Army's Christmas Campaign.
