ON CAMPUS: Students helping community

Article content

During the winter semester, students in Loyalist College’s post-graduate public relations and event management certificate program put their skills into practice by planning community-based fundraisers. They partner with local non-profit organizations and set out to generate funds for programs and services, while raising awareness.
“As public relations and event management students, we have the opportunity to work directly with community partners to learn about their organizations and their fundraising needs,” said Holly Marshall, a 2010 Queen’s University graduate who came to the Loyalist program to gain real-world experience and make industry connections. “The Bay of Quinte region has so many caring and motivated people doing incredible work and I can’t wait to see what comes of the fundraising initiatives my peers and I host.”
Marshall’s team will be hosting Quinte’s Human Bookshelf on Sunday, March 4, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Brake Room. During this event, attendees can learn about members of the community whereby, instead of checking out a paperback or a hardcover, they select a person with a story to tell.
“The purpose of a human bookshelf is to break down barriers and preconceived ideas and establish a meaningful human connection,” said Marshall. “It’s a chance to put away your cell phone and spend time purposefully listening to a stranger. It’s also an opportunity to learn more about others in our community.”
Admission is $10 at the door (cash only) with all proceeds going to Quinte Immigration Services. Refreshments from The Brake Room will be available for purchase.
Other Public Relations and Event Management fundraisers include:
Paint Day & Silent Auction
Channel your inner Picasso at a Paint Day & Silent Auction in support of Triple P Positive Parenting Program.
“This event will show how strongly a community can support their own,” said student Kate Buttaro. “This will be proven by providing a collaborative painting that allows children and families, who use Triple P’s services to see how their community believes in their growth and their future. This event brings a whole new meaning to ‘it takes a village’.”
The fundraiser will be held in the dining hall at Loyalist College, Saturday, March 3 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $25 and are available for purchase online at snapd Quinte or at the door.
Symphony Speakeasy
Step back in time and enjoy live music from the Roaring Twenties, prizes, games, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction and an Experience Auction! Themed attire is encouraged. This event will take place March 3, from 6:30 p.m to 9 p.m. at The Belleville Club (210 Pinnacle St.) in support of the Quinte Symphony. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased online through snapd Quinte and Sam the Record Man (Quinte Mall).
Hangout to Help Out
On Wednesday, March 21, bring your friends for a fun night at the Shark Tank Pub at Loyalist College. From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., enjoy tournaments, food, prizes, games, music and a 50/50 draw for $10. This event is for Loyalist students and all proceeds go to Reaching for Rainbows, a local organization geared towards empowering girls.
Step into Spring
Enjoy a day outside with the family at Quinte Conservation on Old Highway 2. The fundraiser will include a scavenger hunt through the trails, a raffle, photo contest and several nature-based children’s activities. Proceeds from this event will go toward a new water monitoring and research facility to help protect the health of this region’s waterways. Step into Spring will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Admission is $2 per person or $5 per family with all proceeds to Quinte Conservation.
Trivia 4 SailAbility
Get your team together for a trivia night at the Thurlow Community Centre (516 Harmony Rd., Corbyville) in support of Quinte SailAbility, a sailing school for people with physical and intellectual disabilities. This event will be on Wednesday, March 28 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase from the bar, and there will be prizes for the winning team.
