As part our commitment to reconciliation, Loyalist College would like to invite our staff and students to participate in creating a Two Row Wampum with Indigenous Services for display at the College.
To ensure everyone who would like to participate in this project has the opportunity to do so, the following schedule has been created. The Two Row Wampum belt (or treaty belt) is a symbolic record of the first agreement between the Europeans and the First Nations people on Turtle Island (North America). Created in 1613 between the Haudenosaunee (Five Nations of the Iroquois – Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca) and the Dutch settlers in upper New York State, the Two Row Wampum is considered the grandfather of all treaties. It expressed a very important concept – that everyone was equal. The belt is made of white and purple beads. One purple band represents the ship of the Europeans, their leaders, government and religion. The other purple band represents the Haudenosaunee, their leaders, government and way of life.
