- National Indigenous Peoples Day is a day to recognize and celebrate the culture and contributions of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples of Canada. Many Indigenous peoples have chosen June 21 to celebrate their heritage as well as the summer solstice. In response to the Assembly of First Nations’ call for the creation of a National Solidarity Day to be celebrated on June 21, the Governor General of Canada proclaimed the day National Aboriginal Day in 1996. The name was subsequently changed to National Indigenous Peoples Day by the Prime Minister in 2017 – a welcome change that, according to the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, reflected the terminology of the United Nation’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
