41 Years of Athletic Excellence Recognized at Loyalist College

March 27, 2009

On March 25th, Loyalist College held its 41st annual Athletic Banquet to recognize the excellence of its athletes, coaches and trainers. Sara Maybee, varsity basketball player, was named Female Athlete of the Year and Sean McMurtry, a member of the men’s varsity rugby team, was presented with the Male Athlete of the Year award.

Sara Maybee, a student in the Social Service Worker program, was named a Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian, placing second in league scoring with an average of 19.29 points per game. She now sits in third place for all time scoring in the Ontario College Athletic Association (OCAA) women’s basketball league with a total of 949 points.  “I have gained so much by playing basketball at Loyalist,” she commented. “Not just athletic skills, but life lessons as well. I’ve learned to work better in groups, to recognize boundaries and limits, and I’ve developed a deeper respect for others and myself. The atmosphere at Loyalist has been so welcoming and supportive.” Sara was also the recipient of the Loyalist Women’s Basketball MVP award.

Sean McMurtry, a Pre-Health Science student, felt that the Male Athlete of the Year award was a very unexpected honour. “It was a very serious decision for me to return to school after being away for 14 years. I met Larry Cook, one of our coaches, last summer and he really helped ease me through that transition. Being part of the rugby team was a chance to meet new people. I believe that it’s important to give something back to the school and rugby is that opportunity for me. I’m proud to be a member of this team.” As a varsity rugby player he was an OCAA League All Star, Loyalist Men’s Rugby MVP and an OCAA Academic Award winner.

“The CCAA Academic All-Canadian awards go to the distinguished few whose academic excellence is proven through earning recognition on the Dean’s List and who are also named as a Provincial All Star in their sport,” said Jim Buck, Assistant Director of Athletics. “Tonight we recognized our student athletes who demonstrate excellence on the field of play, in the classroom and in the community. We are very proud that 38 of our varsity athletes were recognized as OCAA Academic All-Canadians and that seven of these athletes have received national recognition by being named as Academic All-Canadian Athletes. Congratulations to Elisa Congi and Jocelyne Laviolette from our Women’s Soccer team, Sara Maybee and Erin Rose from our Women’s Basketball team and Rebecca Ramsay, Amy Hoskin and Mandi Buma from Women’s Volleyball.”
