Business Students Place in Top Ten Percentile in Worldwide Competition

December 22, 2008

A team of Business Administration students at Loyalist College placed in the top ten percentile in the Capstone Simulation competition. Capstone is the world’s best-selling business simulation software tool which makes it possible for students to practise business tactics, accounting, human resources and leadership skills. College and university students use the on-line simulation to enhance their business acumen. Loyalist students competed with business students from universities including Harvard, Penn State, California, North Carolina, Texas, McMaster, Queen’s and Alberta. Nathan Brockwell, Agnes Finkle, Chad Guziewicz and Scott Meeks were the members of the Loyalist team.

“The students were divided into teams in which they worked as managers of a $100 Million company, competing against other teams in a simulated business industry,” explained Loyalist Professor Bob Millard. “Each team developed a business strategy and executed tactical plans to support their strategy. Their final course required them to develop and present a stockholder’s debrief to a select group of local business managers. The presentation illustrated how they managed their business and reached their predefined strategy and corresponding goals.”

Chad Guziewicz was a member of the Loyalist team. “I think the greatest thing I learned was what it is like to be in a management position and make decisions on behalf of a company. It’s not as easy as you might think because you feel a little unsure about making decisions that you know will affect other people. Our team dynamic played a crucial role in our success and I think that we were successful at melding the different skills that each of us brought to the table. This simulation gave us the opportunity to put into practise the things that we are learning and see first-hand the results of our decisions. I feel confident about graduating and entering the business world and I know that our group receiving an overall 95 percent on this project competing against universities like Harvard and Penn State has helped to build that confidence level.”

The students were ranked on a daily basis through the points they earned with 2,300 teams worldwide. The top ten percentile has been posted on the CAPSIM website at http://www.capsim.com/.

The Business Administration program at Loyalist College has both a January and September start date.
