Explore Your Creativity at Loyalist College Summer Arts 2009

March 24, 2009

Registration for Loyalist’s Summer Arts 2009 is underway as individuals choose from a wide range of courses and locations. This year’s class settings include the College’s main campus in Belleville, Amherst Island just south west of Kingston, Prince Edward County and Bridgewater Retreat. Painting, writing, woodcarving, and rug hooking are just a few of the numerous options available beginning in May, and running through September.

The program options are an enticing blend of traditional favourites and exciting additions and provide a selection of opportunities for beginners, hobbyists and seasoned artists. Valerie Kent, a long-time teacher and an active member of numerous art organizations, is offering Mixed Media Collage in which participants will make various kinds of papers, combining mediums, gesso and tissue, and then using them in collages. Loom Controlled Shibori encourages participants to explore this loom assisted dye technique with instructor Ellen Good. She established her home studio in Ompah in 1981, after receiving a BFA in Textile Design from Rochester Institute of Technology and has been producing one-of-a-kind production textiles ever since. Writers who are presently working on a manuscript are encouraged to consider Novel-In-Progress with Rosemary Aubert, an internationally acclaimed author of eleven novels and many other works of fiction and non-fiction. She is the winner of the prestigious Arthur Ellis Award for short fiction and a much sought after lecturer and speaker.

“The participants who enroll in Loyalist’s Summer Arts are a wonderful blend of beginners and experienced artists whose enthusiasm and creative energy make it an exciting environment to learn and grow,” explained Sharon Campbell, Summer Arts Coordinator. “Our students are able to study with well-known professional instructors who are only available in our area during the summer. For many, it is an opportunity to meet up with friends, to learn, experiment, and practice while enjoying their art and surroundings.”
