LOYALIST COLLEGE INTRODUCES FIRE SERVICE CAREER PREPARATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

June 21, 2018

Belleville, Ontario, June 21, 2018 – At a launch event held this morning in the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association Fire Training Complex in Trenton, Loyalist College and the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association announced the College’s Fire Service Career Preparation and Development program, a Loyalist Board of Governors Certificate. Designed for volunteer and career firefighters, the new program will be offered through a combination of online theory courses via loyalistfocus.com and hands-on practical training delivered at the Complex.

The program, which can be completed in as little as two semesters, teaches scientific principles of fire safety; fire prevention practice; fire suppression; firefighter first responder emergency patient care; confined space and environmental hazards; and rescue operations. Students will practise and test their skills in simulated and controlled live fire training situations at the Complex, used by the Association’s 17-member fire departments, including CFB Trenton, to train fire service personnel. Upon successful completion of the Certificate, graduates will be eligible to undertake provincial testing to meet the requirements of NFPA 1001 and NFPA 472 with the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Applications for Fall, Winter or Spring intakes of the program, starting in September 2018, can be submitted through loyalistfocus.com. Admission requirements include OSSD/OSSGD or equivalent with courses at the general, advanced, (C), (U) or (M) level or mature applicant and an active member of a fire service. Learners who have experience working in the field may be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). The approximate cost of domestic tuition is $6,900.
