Belleville, Ontario, June 21, 2018 – At a launch event held this morning in the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association Fire Training Complex in Trenton, Loyalist College and the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association announced the College’s Fire Service Career Preparation and Development program, a Loyalist Board of Governors Certificate. Designed for volunteer and career firefighters, the new program will be offered through a combination of online theory courses via and hands-on practical training delivered at the Complex.

The program, which can be completed in as little as two semesters, teaches scientific principles of fire safety; fire prevention practice; fire suppression; firefighter first responder emergency patient care; confined space and environmental hazards; and rescue operations. Students will practise and test their skills in simulated and controlled live fire training situations at the Complex, used by the Association’s 17-member fire departments, including CFB Trenton, to train fire service personnel. Upon successful completion of the Certificate, graduates will be eligible to undertake provincial testing to meet the requirements of NFPA 1001 and NFPA 472 with the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Applications for Fall, Winter or Spring intakes of the program, starting in September 2018, can be submitted through Admission requirements include OSSD/OSSGD or equivalent with courses at the general, advanced, (C), (U) or (M) level or mature applicant and an active member of a fire service. Learners who have experience working in the field may be eligible for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). The approximate cost of domestic tuition is $6,900. “Through our community partnership with the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association, the College identified a need among volunteer and career firefighters for a more flexible way of earning NFPA training requirements, while continuing to work full-time and balance family and volunteer commitments. Together, we responded with the creation of this cost-effective Fire Service Career Preparation and Development Certificate, which includes an online learning component that can be completed from anywhere – anytime.” – Ann Drennan, Sr. Vice-President Academic & Chief Learning Officer, Loyalist College

“With the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services now requiring municipalities to certify their volunteer and full-time firefighters in Ontario, the partnership between the Hastings Prince Edward Mutual Aid Association and Loyalist College could not have come at a better time. The College’s Fire Service Career Preparation and Development program will help to fill the mandated need for certified firefighters in rural Ontario.” – Robert Rutter, Deputy Fire Chief, Prince Edward County Fire & Rescue

“Today we are excited to begin this joint venture with Loyalist College. It will be a milestone in training our fire services for years to come.
