Loyalist College Journalism Students to Launch Hyperlocal Websites

November 26, 2012

At a media conference on Tuesday, November 27, third-year Loyalist College Journalism – Online, Print and Broadcast students will launch their hyperlocal websites to the public. Increasingly popular in Canada, hyperlocal journalism focuses on news targeted for a geographic or thematic area, serving a specific neighbourhood, town or small city through an online platform.

“This unique project empowers our students to become publishers,” said Professor Robert Washburn. “They get to experience all sides of the job – from creating a marketing plan and advertising to building a website and sharing their written content through it. When they graduate, these students will use their hyperlocal sites as amazing evidence of their creativity and skills across diverse multimedia platforms. Employers will be impressed with how they’ve connected with a local audience.”
