Loyalist College Partners with School Boards to Support Students’ Evaluation of Career Options

Loyalist College and surrounding school boards are providing opportunities for students to gain a better understanding of the career options available to them and the post-secondary studies that will prepare them for these fields. SETUP (Science Engineering Technology Ultimate Pathways) and the Dual Credit Program are two of these initiatives. Funded by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, the activities are coordinated by the Eastern Lakeshore and PASS School College Work Regional Planning Team.

SETUP was held at Loyalist earlier this month with over 150 grade eight students from the Hastings Prince Edward, Algonquin Lakeshore Catholic, Kawartha Pine Ridge, and Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Boards participating. The event addressed the growing need for skilled people in the science, engineering, technology and skilled trades sectors and the resulting future opportunities. The sessions were interactive, enabling the students to actively participate in the learning experience.

On March 4th approximately 50 students from East Northumberland Secondary School (ENSS) came to the Loyalist campus to learn about the Dual Credit Program. The program enables high school students to participate in apprenticeship training and post-secondary courses, earning dual credits that count toward both their high school diploma and their post-secondary diploma, degree or apprenticeship certification.

“Having the college students show us what they do is amazing,” said Matthew Robins, a student from ENSS. “The Loyalist teachers were there to explain it all and the experience was great.”

Sally Hodgson is one of the teachers who visited the campus with the group. “It is an excellent way for the students to gain a better understanding of college life. It increases the relevance to receive information from current students or graduates of the programs. I think that our students will feel more comfortable in making their post-secondary choices after attending this event.”

“The students discovered all kinds of interesting career options and found out what credentials they’ll need to get the job they want,” said Savanna Morgan, Coordinator, School College Work Initiative. “We always welcome the opportunity to share the great things that are happening at Loyalist.”
