LOYALIST COLLEGE TO HOST SKILLS ONTARIO CAREER EXPLORATION EVENT FOR YOUNG WOMEN

February 16, 2018

Belleville, Ontario, February 16, 2018 – Loyalist College will host a Skills Ontario Career Exploration Event for Young Women in the College’s Bay of Quinte Skills Centre on Thursday, February 22. The day will be supported by The W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowship Program at Loyalist.

This initiative will provide girls in grades 8 and 9 with an opportunity to learn about careers in the skilled trades and technologies. Participants will meet, network, and enjoy a meal with female mentors who have chosen a career in the skilled trades and technologies, and who have a passion for their field.

“We are looking forward to welcoming more than 80 students from Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board and Algonquin & Lakeshore Catholic District School Board to campus where they will learn about skilled trades education and career options,” said Ann Drennan, Sr. Vice-President Academic and Chief Learning Officer at Loyalist College. “They will engage in a hands-on Carpentry activity, tour the College, and participate in two panels with other women who are currently studying or have graduated from skilled trades and technology programs at the College. Nurturing leadership in these industries through mentorship is central to the W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowship at Loyalist and beyond.”

About The W. Garfield Weston Foundation Fellowship
The Fellowship offers tuition and bursary incentives, as well as academic and professional support, to encourage students to train for and succeed in skilled trades careers. What began as a pilot project in 2013 with just 15 students and apprentices has since grown with support for more than 150 students entering skilled trades programs. During the course of their studies, recipients who maintain a specified minimum average may receive up to $4,000 in bursaries from The W. Garfield Weston Foundation and a tuition credit from the College. In addition, the Foundation has provided funding to support outreach activities, including PD events for teachers, to increase awareness of the opportunities in skilled trades. A huge thank you to The W. Garfield Weston Foundation for this outstanding support which makes such a difference to individuals and to our communities.
