Loyalist Continuing Education Presented International Award

December 14, 2007

Loyalist College has been honoured for excellence in the Best Brochure category by the Learning Resources Network (LERN), an international association in lifelong learning.  The winning entry was included in a showcase of internationally exemplary programs at the LERN Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida on November 15 to 17, 2007.  The brochure, Serious Summer Fun – Camps for Kids and Teens, was submitted by Christine Eddy, a Program Development Officer.  Information about Loyalist was on display in the conference Hall of Learning throughout the three-day conference.  In addition, the winning programs will be featured in future LERN publications and on LERN’s website.

Judges indicated that there was a very high level of excellence in this year’s field of nominees.  Julie Coates, Vice President of Information Services for LERN, said that this year’s award nominees were among the highest quality ever submitted.  Ms. Coates also noted that there were more winners selected this year than in any previous year, due to the excellence in quality of the nominations.

In selecting programs to be recognized for excellence, Coates said the primary criteria judges used for those selected was the quality of being at the leading edge in the field of lifelong learning, as evidenced by their nomination.  In addition, judges also applied the following criteria: originality, innovation, appropriateness as a model for other programs, replicability, and measurable outcomes.  The awards selection process is very competitive, Coates said, and it is truly an honour to be selected.  Loyalist College’s entry was selected from more than 100 nominations from four countries.

“We have had tremendous success with our Serious Summer Fun camps program,” said Christine Eddy.  “In 2006 our program won a provincial Conny award for best marketing and an award of excellence in generational programming from LERN.  This year’s first place award from LERN for Best Brochure is the crowning achievement for our summer camps program.  It is an honour to be recognized by LERN, an international organization focused on supporting lifelong learning.”

“This recognition on the international stage is such a tribute to the College,” added Loyalist College President, Maureen Piercy. “Loyalist has been a provincial leader in the field of Continuing Education for many years, experiencing a steady growth in the programs offered and student enrolment.”

Tom Malloy, Loyalist Dean of Schools of Skills Training, Access and Continuing Education, added, “The learning opportunities have increased immensely through the flexibility and convenience that participants are discovering in the distance learning courses. We have a dedicated and creative team in our Continuing Education Department and this award serves as a confirmation that we are moving forward in a positive, progressive direction to serve our communities better.”
