The Loyalist Lancers Men’s Rugby Team are provincial champions once again, repeating their success of 2009 in a 28-12 victory over the Georgian Grizzlies on Wednesday, in front of an enthusiastic home crowd.
The victory caps an undefeated 5-0-2 season for the Lancers, and Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation, Jim Buck, congratulated members along with the OCAA Executive Director Blair Webster, who presented the team with their gold medals. “This team is exceptional,” said Jim Buck. “This championship is the result of a lot of hard work – as team players – as well as dedication on the part of the players and coaching staff.”
Bryan Cole was named Man of the Match, with 13 points. League awards were also presented to Sean McMurtry, as MVP of the League, and to Jesse Gunter and Frank Bailey, who were named to the All Star Team. Jesse Jones was the team’s nominee for Rookie of the Year. Loyalist coaches Larry Cook, Rob Cooke and Team Manager Pat Dockrill were named Coaching Staff of the Year for the League.
Loyalist President Maureen Piercy offered congratulations on behalf of the entire College community. “This has been another outstanding season for this team, and I want to extend sincere congratulations to all our wonderful players, amazing coaching staff, athletics staff and all supporters,” she emphasized. “We are very proud of each one of you, and are pleased to celebrate a repeat championship with you. Go Lancers!”
