Loyalist Student Joins CBC in China as Part of News Team

November 16, 2010

Third-year Loyalist Television and New Media Production student Dean Gariepy has been chosen by CBC Sports to work as a camera operator from November 16th to 27th at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Selected from recent graduates and senior-year Canadian college students studying in the television and new media production field, Dean will provide coverage of a wide range of sporting events on behalf of CBC.

“The opportunity to travel to China and work alongside seasoned professionals at the Asian Games is amazing,” said Dean Gariepy. “I love covering sports and have had the good fortune to work on NASCAR and Canadian Rally Championship events, but never anything of this magnitude. Our program gives us a solid foundation in all aspects of the industry so I feel confident that I am well versed and prepared for this exciting challenge.”

“To have Don Peppin, Producer of CBC Sports, approach us for candidates to interview for this position speaks volumes for the respect our Television and New Media Production program has within the industry,” said Professor Cathy Goddard. “Don is a member of our program’s advisory committee and has helped to shape the program. He knows first-hand the skill level and professionalism of our students and now one of our students will be a trainee in China. His confidence in Dean is definitely a positive testament to our students and the program.  CBC has a world-wide reputation for producing award-winning host broadcast coverage of events on the international sports stage. From time-to-time we engage in events which may not even be broadcast in Canada but our credentials still bring clients to our door looking for our expertise and personnel. Such is the case with the 2010 Asian Summer Games in Guangzhou, China where CBC Sports will produce coverage of Athletics at the 80,000 seat main stadium.”

Don Peppin explained that part of the legacy of producing these events includes CBC adding staff and technical personnel who are new to the broadcasting business to provide them with an opportunity to be part of a professional production crew and participate in the technical set-up and execution of the coverage.  “CBC decided to bring intern-level camera operators to work with each of the three field production units. After a search from various broadcast programs, CBC selected a Loyalist student with impressive credentials and the beginnings of a promising career. In selecting Dean Gariepy we found the qualities and attitude we look for in new hires and his experiences, though limited in the professional world, showed exceptional ambition and the drive for excellence.

“The Television and New Media Production program at Loyalist is recognized for delivering high quality interns and ultimately graduates into the Canadian broadcasting business. The variety of experience, the emphasis on attitude, flexibility and hard work prepares graduates to work in any broadcast environment in Canada.”

While away, Dean Gariepy will be contributing to the LoyalistTV.com blog. For information regarding the Television and New Media Production program, click here.
