Loyalist Student Member of CBC Sports Team at Asian Winter Games

February 03, 2011

Loyalist College student, Alison Spencer, is working with CBC Sports at the 2011 Asian Winter Games in Almaty, Kazakhstan. A third-year student in the College’s Television and New Media Production program, she is gaining valuable career experience as a production assistant and runner for the Women’s Ice Hockey crew from January 26th until February 5th.

Alison Spencer is not new to the hockey world. Her résumé includes the coverage of a number of high-profile events. “I haven’t finished college and I’ve already been a part of The World Cup, Hockey Night in Canada and now I’m visiting Kazakhstan, a country I never imagined I would see,” said Alison. “That is what thrills me about this industry. You get to experience so much and there are always great opportunities awaiting you. I hope to learn as much as I can while I’m here, meet new people and see new places. I can’t thank Don Peppin from CBC Sports and the faculty of the Television and New Media Production program enough for this wonderful opportunity. I love working in this industry.”

“It’s so gratifying to see a student in her graduating year be ready to take on an assignment of this magnitude,” said Professor Cathy Goddard. “When major players like CBC Sports feel this confident in our students’ abilities, it confirms that Loyalist students are acquiring the skills they need to be competitive in this challenging industry. It is our hope that this will lead to more opportunities like this for future students of the program.  I know that Alison will do well and we’re all really excited for her.”

The program’s strength is reflected in another recent opportunity with CBC Sports in which third-year Television and New Media Production student, Dean Gariepy, worked as a camera operator at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China. Jane Harrison, Dean of Media Studies, commends the faculty and acknowledges that opportunities such as these demonstrate the respect industry professionals have for the program and Loyalist’s students. “This can be largely attributed to the faculty’s commitment to ensuring that the program of study is current and relevant in this constantly evolving field. The skill level of the students, and the strong relationship between the faculty and the industry professionals, has resulted in wonderful opportunities like the one that Alison is now a part of in Kazakhstan. Working with and learning from the CBC professionals at the Asian Winter Games is an impressive addition to anyone’s résumé. For a student this is outstanding.”
