Loyalist Students Recognized at Undergraduate Awards Night

November 25, 2009

On November 19th, Loyalist College recognized the achievements of 301 students at the annual Undergraduate Awards Reception. The awards totaled $179,200 and were made possible by individual donors, businesses, community organizations, Foundations, and the Loyalist College Foundation. First Generation bursaries funded by the provincial government were also presented.  Congratulations were extended by College Board Chair Margaret Werkhoven, Chair of the Loyalist College Foundation, Beverley Townsend, and President Maureen Piercy.

New awards presented at this year’s ceremony included: the Beverley Townsend Bursary; the Canadian Federation of University Women’s Bursary; the Chris Carson Athletic Bursary; the J&B Edwards Enterprises Inc. Bursary; the Lee Reilly-Denis Bursary; the Marilyn McCoy Nursing and Practical Nursing Bursary; the Mary McConnell Bursary; the Peter F. Huff Memorial Bursary; the Student Guard Health Insurance Award, and the They Integrated Inc. Award.

Melissa Tait, a second-year Photojournalism student, was the recipient of two awards: The Canadian Millennium Scholarship Foundation – National In-Course Award and the Kingston Typographical Union Award. “It was a pretty fantastic feeling to receive two awards,” she said. “The Typographical Union Award holds special meaning because the faculty chose the recipient and by being selected I feel they really like the work that I’m doing. These awards are an enormous help to me financially. Our photography equipment is very costly. Now I can get a jump start on what I will need to begin my career in six months’ time.”

College President Maureen Piercy talked about the importance of the awards and offered congratulations to donors, recipients, and Loyalist faculty and staff who support student learning and success. “Tonight wasn’t only about financial support. Every person here plays an important role in the network of generosity, encouragement and support which allows our students to achieve their goals.”
