Loyalist Welcomes Community to Return to Learn Information Session

February 13, 2009

On Wednesday, February 25 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m., Loyalist College invites mature students who are considering returning to school, or those who have already applied, to visit the campus for Return to Learn, a special information and planning session. Information will be presented on the program choices available and how to finance a college education, as well as the support services that the College has in place. There will be an opportunity to arrange an appointment with an advisor to explore further options and assess the value of prior education and work experience.

“The choice to return to learning is prompted by many factors, including job layoffs, the need for skills updates, and career advancement,” said Laura Naumann, Manager of Employment and Career Services. “When an individual has been away from the school environment for a period of time they have a lot of questions and it can seem overwhelming. Program options, the registration process and possible financial assistance are just some of their concerns. At this session we’ll outline opportunities and answer their questions. We’ll provide the information they need to make the career choices that are the best fit for them.”

“We’re very pleased that a representative from the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities will be here to explain the Ontario Government’s Second Career Strategy program. This is an initiative that can provide eligible persons who have been laid off with financial support to help them train for a new career. Nancy Morgan from Career Edge, the local employment agency which is administering the Second Career initiative, will explain the needs assessment and application process necessary when applying for Second Career.”

Mature students are finding that returning to college can be a very positive experience. “Following company restructuring I found myself without a job, and being the only income earner in our family it is imperative for me to be employed,” said Dan Duncan, a Mechanical Techniques student at Loyalist College. “As a mature student I think that we give balance to the class by setting a very focused example. My marks are in the high 80s and 90s. It’s exciting to be here because I feel like I am regaining control of my life. This has been a very positive experience for me and I can’t say enough good things about the faculty and the support they offer.”

The Return to Learn information session will be held Wednesday, February 25 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. in Room 2H12 in the Kente Building at Loyalist College.
