Loyalist Women

December 22, 2008

The Loyalist College Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team is entering 2009 in first place in the Eastern Division. The team’s strength is evident in the series of victories throughout the season. With only one loss, their wins have made them formidable contenders for the upcoming semester.

“Our team is off to a great start this season. We are working hard and we’re having a lot of fun,” said Captain Amy Hoskin. “I think that our greatest strength is the variety of skills and the depth of our team. We have some extremely talented players who are able to play many different positions very well. It feels incredible to be in the position that we are but we also realize that this makes us a target. Other teams will be trying to knock us out of that spot so this motivates us to work harder. One thing that really helps is the support of our fans. When the fans are cheering and into the game it gets our team pumped and excited, the louder the better. It’s great when people come out to support our team and the College.”

Head Coach Tony Clarke talked about the things that make this year’s team special. “We have more players with good high school and club experience which helps out a lot in the league. We have lots of options to work with and the rookie players are learning quickly and working hard. Other teams are improving so we have to work extra hard because we are the team to beat. We need to push forward and win all of our games to get to the provincial championship.”

“This team is amazing to watch,” said Greg Gavin, Director of Athletics. “I’ve watched them be down by 14 points, dig in and come back to win the match. To come back from that kind of deficit shows real character. I’m not convinced that they realize how truly good they are. If they continue to play this well they will be in a great position to win a medal this year.”
