The Annual Job Fair at Loyalist College was held yesterday with close to 100 employers participating. The event began with the official opening of the new Career Centre on campus. Located close to the main entrance of the Kente Building, the 1,250 sq. ft. area is very accessible for students, graduates, and employers visiting the College.
Board of Governors Chair Bob Cottrell commented that, “Commitment to the success of our students is a key goal of this College, and that includes a commitment to employment success. We are proud of our job placement rate of 93.9% and the consistently high ranking the College enjoys in this Key Performance Indicator (KPI). This Career Centre will be well used by our students, our graduates, and of course, by our employers.”
Jessica Bourque, President of the Loyalist Student Government, added her congratulations on behalf of the students of the College. College President Maureen Piercy emphasized that “Loyalist is student-centred, and learning-centred, and the new Career Centre reflects that philosophy.”
“Not only do our students and employers have access to more space here for consultation with a member of the Employment and Alumni Services team, for workshops and for interviews, this Centre is available to our graduates as well,” she said. “As Loyalist alumni they are welcome to make use of the facility as well in their career development.”
Connie Millar, Manager of Employment and Alumni Services at Loyalist, reports that since the doors opened on January 7, over 100 appointments with students have been held for résumé writing and job search assistance, tripling the number of visits during the same six-week period last year. The number of in-office workshops has also increased significantly.
Another new feature which has been introduced this year is “Employers in the Hall”, a program for employers interested in recruiting Loyalist students for full-time, part-time and summer positions.
