Start at Loyalist this September — Still Time to Apply

By:  Marilyn Warren, Communications, Loyalist College

The opportunity to register and begin classes at Loyalist College this September is still an option. Spaces are available in some programs and applications continue to be accepted at ontariocolleges.ca. Students can start training now — the sooner they start, the sooner they can graduate and begin their career.

Late last summer Jordan Whitby from Kingston applied to Loyalist’s Electrical Engineering Technician program. Now, entering his second year of the program, Jordan describes the positive impact that choice has had on his life. “I was late in applying because I was still deciding which program I wanted to take. Once I made that decision everyone was helpful and the process went very smoothly. The professors are great and the hands-on training definitely works well for me — my first year was very successful. I would encourage anyone considering college to start as soon as possible. After all, I’m a year closer to starting my career than those who hesitated last summer and decided to wait.”

“I went to college following high school, graduated and started working. I soon realized the field I was in wasn’t the right fit for me,” said Markus Bardy, a graduate of Moira Secondary School from Tyendinaga.  “It was not until I went through the selection process with the local police service that I knew I wanted to enter the Police Foundations program at Loyalist. By then the summer was almost over. Not wanting to wait another year I applied, was accepted and entered the program last September.

“My first year was awesome. I was taught the basics of what it takes to work within the justice system. We studied subjects that included ethics, sociology and psychology. I began to understand the importance of these fields in a policing career. The first year forms a strong foundation to continue building upon.

“Life is too short to wait around. If you believe that you want to become involved in something, then go for it. Don’t sit around waiting. It’s never too late to go back to school and often waiting can make things more difficult. What could be worse than living your life and always wondering ‘what if’?”
