Career Preparations Start in January at Loyalist College

December 16, 2008

Many associate September with the beginning of school. You don’t have to wait until next fall. Loyalist College makes it possible to begin your studies in January — you’ll graduate sooner, ready to embark on a new career.

One of the College programs offering a January intake is Business Sales and Marketing. This two-year diploma program prepares graduates for careers in business-to-business sales and marketing in a wide range of industries. Graduates can capitalize on the strengths they gain from their combined focus of study in sales and marketing skills.

“I would not have the job that I do, or be as successful at it, if it weren’t for Loyalist,” said Susan Henry, who graduated from the program in 2001 and is the Sales Representative for Eastern Ontario at Atlantic Packaging. “The training and hands-on experience that I received while at the College were definitely key factors in Atlantic’s decision to hire me. There is no question that the faculty helped me to get my dream job and prepared me with the tools necessary to be successful. It is the professors who truly make the program. They sincerely care about you as a person and only feel that they are successful if you succeed. You learn about many different business avenues and because of this you are able to enter a wide range of sales positions. In my career I have the freedom of being my own boss and developing relationships with outstanding people. I have, and will always, tell people how amazing the program and the College are.”

David Fauser graduated from the program in 1998 and is the District Manager for Cimco Refrigeration 3. “Never before has the client wanted more return on their investment. Their expectations of professionalism have risen and they are often prepared to pay more for a higher level of service. The professional sales training you get at Loyalist gives you a leg up in the industry. You learn questioning and listening techniques that enable you to understand your clients needs and provide the service they are looking for. During the time that I have been here we have hired two Loyalist students who interned for us and both have been promoted since their arrival. During difficult economic times, it is very rare that a company’s sales force is downsized. It feels good to know that your skills are needed and crucial to success. This is definitely a rewarding career.”

Loyalist’s program is modeled on the certification standards of the Canadian Professional Sales Association (CPSA). The students in the program receive student membership in the CPSA. Once they have gained two years of sales experience, graduates are eligible to apply for their Certified Sales Professional (CSP) designation through CPSA.

There are many options for those interested in beginning their studies in January in the areas of Business, Justice Studies, Media and Human Studies. To learn more about your choices visit Winter Program Starts.
