Esthetics and Spa Management — New Name for Loyalist College Program Reflects Depth of Graduate Skills

October 29, 2009

The recent program name change from Esthetician to Esthetics and Spa Management reflects the breadth of skills that Loyalist students develop during their two years of study at the college. Approval for the change was received from the Credentials Validation Service (CVA) at the Ontario College Quality Assurance Service. The title modification of the program recognizes the strong business skill set Loyalist graduates possess in addition to their technical esthetician training — and their enhanced career opportunities. Some choose to be professional estheticians in salons, health spas or resorts. Others become managers of salons, esthetic boutiques and spas — and then there are those who follow an entrepreneurial path through salon ownership. The blend of esthetics and business studied in Loyalist’s program prepares graduates to make the choice that’s right for them.

“When I initially entered the Esthetician program at the college I was surprised and intrigued by the strong business component — the new title reflects the program content more accurately than the original one,” said graduate Laura Lupenette, owner of Derma-glo Day Spa, located in Prince Edward Square in Rossmore. “It was the combination of the esthetics skills and business training that enabled me to be doing what I am now— successfully living my life-long dream of owning and operating my own business. At Loyalist I learned how to write a business plan, create a budget, order inventory, and advertise — all skills I have used in my business in addition to esthetics. I believe this has helped me enjoy success much sooner and enabled me to expand my business after only five months of operation.”

Jim Whiteway, Chair of the Schools of Business and Management Studies, Bioscience, and Justice Studies, feels that the CVA decision to approve the name change to Esthetics and Spa Management recognizes the program’s strength. “Graduates are prepared with both the technical and business skills required in the esthetics industry. This is one of the primary goals of the program — we enable graduates to pursue the path of their choice. As the industry continues to grow and evolve, so will their options.”

The Esthetics and Spa Management students operate The Spa at Loyalist, a beautiful, state-of-the-art facility in which they provide a full range of esthetic services in a supervised environment. Members of the community are encouraged to call (613) 969-1913, ext. 2671 to arrange an appointment.
