PR Students Give Non-Profit Agencies a Communications Boost

March 10, 2010

Members of the non-profit sector are invited to register for a series of Community Media Workshops hosted by the post-graduate Public Relations students from March 22nd to 25th at Loyalist College. The complimentary workshops are an opportunity for those working within small agencies to discover ways of achieving success with limited resources. Participants will gain information on topics such as how to make the most of using the on-line professional network, ways of communicating through design, blogging, how to gain the most from college student internships, and ways to improve PowerPoint presentations.

Toni Kirby, Executive Assistant at Community Living Quinte West, has attended past workshops and is looking forward to returning this year. “The media workshops are presented in a very professional manner. For non-profit organizations this is a very good way to access training and to stay on top of the latest trends, especially social media.  Personally I have had many of my questions answered without even having to ask them. I am looking forward to more of the same.”

Jordan Zebedee is one of the students organizing the initiative. “We’re offering a wide range of workshops. The group I am working with will be providing an overview of the information social media can bring to businesses and potential employers. It is important to have an understanding of the impact that this can have.”

“This experience has provided us with an opportunity to step outside of our student role and into that of a professional,” said Marina Apperley, a Public Relations student. “It is rewarding to know that we are assisting non-profit organizations within our community by providing guidance in meeting their communication objectives. The program has prepared me well to work in the public relations field and this project makes it possible for me to apply these skills in a very positive and beneficial way.”
