Reading and Writing Tools Workshop for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities

March 18, 2009

The Loyalist College Student Government and Disability Services Office are pleased to host Reading and Writing Tools, a workshop for children and adults with learning disabilities, on Thursday, March 26th from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.  The session will be facilitated by Cherith Sinasac, from Strategic Transitions Inc., who will explain how WordQ, SpeakQ and Inspiration (r) software can support and enhance the writing process.

WordQ is a simple yet powerful writing tool designed specifically to make writing easier. SpeakQ is a plug-in software that enhances WordQ with simple, text-to-speech functionality. Diagrams, outlines and mind maps can be created with the use of Inspiration (r), an award-winning tool used by students, ages 10 to adult.

“Participants will be introduced to these products and how they work together to support writers in developing thinking skills to visually plan, analyze, organize and communicate clearly,” said Ted Morrison, an Assistive Technician/Support Services Worker at the College. “Writers do not need to be limited by their spelling, memory or language skills. The workshop will explain how these tools can enable them to overcome obstacles to their reading and writing success, and thereby improve their ability to communicate effectively.”

Those interested in attending are encouraged to contact Ted Morrison at Morrison@loyalistc.on.ca or call (613) 969-1913, ext. 2109 by March 24th.
