September Launch of New 3D Video Production Program Announced

May 31, 2011

Loyalist College is very pleased to announce the launch of the 3D Video Production program.  Starting in September 2011, the accelerated post-graduate certificate program will introduce students who have previously earned a diploma or degree in video, film or television production to the significant differences between shooting and editing in 2D versus 3D, and the creation of 3D soundscapes.

Loyalist President Maureen Piercy announced the establishment of the new 3D Video Production program at the Opening of The Headland 3D Centre of Excellence in Picton today.  “Loyalist has a long history of leadership in post-secondary media studies programs in the country, and the introduction of a 3D program is another first.  We are absolutely delighted to be offering it here in Picton, as part of the 3D Centre of Excellence.”

Building on the skills learned at the undergraduate level, students will refine techniques to demonstrate their employability in the content creation industry of today as well as tomorrow.  In collaboration with industry professionals, students will develop new competencies to meet the needs of 3D video production – including the flexibility and innovative approaches required as the industry moves from 2D to 3D.

“It is a rare and exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of program development using new technology,” said Jane Harrison, Loyalist Dean of Media Studies.  “I had the chance to attend a recent multi-camera 3D test shoot of a fast-paced motorcycle race.  It was fascinating to see that, while there are some similarities to traditional shooting, the 3D format presents many unique and intriguing challenges.  I truly commend the television and new media faculty at Loyalist who have honed their skills in this new frontier and will be providing an exceptional opportunity for our students to become the leading innovators in an evolving industry.”

Stacey Hatch, Executive Director of The Headland, noted that, “The creation of the 3D Centre of Excellence provides highly specialized skills training opportunities that will allow graduates to work in 3D television production, creating programming for domestic and international television markets, in our own region.”

“WhistleStop Productions, as a key tenant of The Headland, is excited about the opportunity to create a public/private/educational partnership that will benefit both students and the local creative economy,” added David Hatch, President of WhistleStop Productions Inc.
