Sports Dome Coming to Loyalist College September 2008

November 20, 2007

On Friday, November 16, community members gathered at Loyalist College to hear the official announcement that initial site preparations for a Sports Dome facility are about to begin. The Dome will open in September 2008, providing a year-round indoor facility for a wide range of sporting events and community groups.

The dome will be 330 feet long by 120 feet wide. It will include two separate playing surfaces, a turf field composed of a lush, shock absorbent, grass-like material, and a cushioned court surface that will accommodate sports such as tennis, basketball and volleyball.

“We are very pleased to be a key partner in this project, which will bring so many benefits to our community,” said College President Maureen Piercy.  “I congratulate all the community players who worked so hard to make this announcement possible.”

“We are tremendously excited for all of the kids in our community,” said Taguen Christie, President of the Belleville Youth Soccer Association. “Everyone came together on this. Having these facilities to practice and play on will make it possible for the kids to take their playing to a whole new level.”

“I hope that you will look at this facility as part of your community and that it brings enjoyment to everyone,” said Ralph Farley of Underair Inc., and President of the Farley Group, a company that has been installing domes for the past 30 years.

Belleville Mayor Neil Ellis added his congratulations. “This partnership will bring the City of Belleville and Loyalist even closer and is the start of a big and exciting project.”

“This project is one of the finest examples of what a community can accomplish when they are committed and work toward a common goal,” said George Burton, Loyalist’s Vice-President of Enrolment Management and Student Services. “It took many months of careful planning with the City of Belleville, The Belleville Youth Soccer Association, local tennis enthusiasts and Ralph Farley, to envision and create a facility that will work well for everyone. We believe this has been accomplished and the College is very proud that this community dome will be located on our campus.”
