In recognition of athletic, academic and leadership excellence, 27 Loyalist College students were presented with athletic scholarships at the College’s annual athletic luncheon held on January 13th.
This year’s scholarship recipients are:
Women’s Volleyball: Leighann Bishop, Tiana Gauthier, Brittany Gray, Joanne Laton and Kirsten Talsma
Men’s Volleyball: Greg Gillespie, Ian Hortop, Josh Lappala and Matt Woods
Women’s Soccer: Vanessa Brault, Meghan Healey and Carly Simons
Women’s Basketball: Katie Ballantyne, Dianne Bouder, Lindsey Buck, Samantha Goff and Haley Sisler
Men’s Basketball: Calvin Chevannes, Tim Helferty, Trevor Mayer and Alexander Sargeant
Men’s Rugby: Frank Bailey, Bryan Cole, Jesse Gunter, Jesse Jones, Sean McMurtry and Devin Metzger
Jesse Gunter, a member of the men’s rugby team, is a student in the College’s Police Foundations program and a graduate of Trenton High School. “Rugby is a very tough sport both physically and mentally. The determination and tenacity that it takes to play makes me feel strong and confident in making decisions on and off the field. The combined support of my teammates, coaches and faculty has really been amazing. The successful season we had this year, which included winning the championship, is one that I will never forget.”
“My soccer teammates were my first Loyalist friends,” said Meghan Healey, a second-year Practical Nursing student and a graduate of St. Theresa Secondary School. “Practices started before classes began, so soccer was my introduction to the College. I’ve worked hard to stay on top of my schoolwork so practices and game schedules would not interfere with my studies. Playing varsity sports has been a great experience. Soccer played a definite role in developing the strong connection that I feel for Loyalist and the pride I have in being a student here.”
“It’s always rewarding to hear our athletes say that varsity sports have been a great part of their Loyalist experience,” said Jim Buck, Manager of Athletics and Campus Recreation, when addressing the athletes at the luncheon. “It’s you, the players, who create that experience. Today we’re here to recognize your athletic, academic and leadership strengths, and to thank you for all that you bring to the Loyalist community. Congratulations, you make us very proud.”
